There has been a lot of trees felled and ink spilled lately to produce all the stories regarding Woodstock, which just celebrated its 40th birthday. And while much of the negative news comes from all the predictable places, it's a shame (but not really a surprise) that some of it is coming from what we'll politely call "our side." There are those inside drug policy reform that question whether marijuana festivals, like Hempfest, are good or bad for business. And since Woodstock was the original marijuana festival, we'll discuss the issue tonight inside the Opium Den.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the barely reported news story that a significant increase in the smoking of marijuana is expected by baby boomers once they retire. No longer subject to random drug tests from employers or fears of being found out by fellow employees (although they'd find more friends than foes), and with the kids long gone and on their own, Grandma and Grandpa are gonna smoke some dope. And they're not gonna tolerate being harassed by their government and, more to the point, the local cops.

It has been quite interesting to follow all the weirdness going on in the health-care debate. It's all mindless, of course, as whatever bill will be voted upon is not even close to being written. But one thing is certain: Barack Obama is in shock. He doesn't show it, but he is. This was not the way it was supposed to be. It was supposed to be so much easier. Obama was surfing a pretty big wave of approval early on, and now, especially regarding healthcare, he finds it's rushing toward the rocks. President Obama needs to find his mojo. Here's how.

Mother Nature took her toll last night on our little studio here inside the Opium Den. But the good folks at Comcast (yes, there are good people working for cable companies) figured out the problem - my modem was fried - and now we're back on line!

President Obama's White House is asking Americans to forward along any and all emails they receive from other Americans that say anything that sounds "fishy" regarding healthcare. One can only assume the White House definition of "fishy" is anything that doesn't tow the party line. I mean, really. For someone who taught Constitution law, Obama is displaying an appalling lack of any fundamental grasp of the First Amendment. As the rightful backlash continues to gain speed, the White House is stepping all over its penis in an attempt to walk that bit of bullshit back from the edge.
